Where does the Salt come from?

The Salt Range is located in Northeast Pakistan and originates in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. It spans approximately 186 miles and ranges in width from 5 to 19 miles. This region boasts several peaks that reach nearly 5,000 feet in height, and is home to six primary mines, each producing a unique and distinct salt.

Of all the mines in the Salt Range, the Khewra Salt Mine (also known as the Mayo Salt Mine) is the largest, oldest, and most well-known. This mine is responsible for producing the majority of the Himalayan Salt that is known for its light-to-dark pink hues.

Dating back to the 1820s, the Khewra Salt Mine is an expansive network of tunnels that extends over 25 miles and covers 18 working levels. The mine is a popular tourist destination and attracts approximately 300,000 visitors to Pakistan each year. Visitors are drawn to the mine's unique artistic salt carvings, including miniature replicas of famous monuments such as the Eiffel Tower and the Great Wall of China. Other attractions include a small mosque and a bridge constructed entirely from salt blocks that extends over a salt brine pond.

Is Himalayan Salt sustainable?

In brief, Himalayan salt is a natural product that contains trace minerals present in our bodies, making it a beneficial addition to our diets. The mining process for this salt involves skilled workers who use traditional methods, resulting in minimal pollution or waste byproducts.

Despite being formed millions of years ago, the six mines where Himalayan pink salt is harvested hold vast supplies. While the exact number of tons is disputed, the largest mine, Khewra, is estimated to hold 6.7 billion tons, with about 220 million tons currently accessible. Harvesting about 400,000 tons per year, this mine alone could continue at a similar rate without expansion for approximately 550 more years. If mining were to expand further into the mountains, the supply could be considered almost limitless.
